Overview

Dungeness Spit is a kitesurfing spot on one of the longest natural sand spits in the United States (about 9 km), near Sequim on the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The spit creates a sheltered natural harbor (Dungeness Harbor) on one side and faces the open strait on the other. NOTE: the spit is part of the Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge — check restrictions and respect protected wildlife areas. Advanced level due to strong strait currents and isolation.

On the water

Strait of Juan de Fuca with very cold saltwater (7-12°C/45-54°F). A 5/3mm wetsuit with hood and gloves. Strait side: swell and formed chop. Harbor side: more sheltered flat water. Very strong tidal currents. Sandy bottom on the spit. Conditions highly variable depending on tide and wind.

Hazards

Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge — access restrictions possible, respect wildlife (seabirds, seals). Very strong tidal currents in the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Very cold water — hypothermia. Very long sand spit — isolation is a major risk. Maritime traffic. The spit can be submerged by exceptionally high tides. Always ride with a buddy.
