Overview

Sandy Point is a kitesurfing spot in northern Washington State, near the Canadian border, in Birch Bay. This sand point offers access to a shallow and sheltered body of water, ideal when south to west winds blow. The bay offers flat water to light chop at high tide, and exposes vast sand flats at low tide. Views of the San Juan Islands and Mount Baker.

Shallow bay with cold saltwater (7-13°C/45-55°F). A 5/3mm wetsuit recommended. Flat water to light chop in the sheltered bay. Sandy bottom. Vast very shallow areas at low tide. Tides significantly influence the rideable area. Slightly warmer water in summer on the shallows.

Hazards

Cold water — hypothermia. Low tide exposing vast sand flats reducing rideable area. Tidal currents. Proximity to the Canadian border — stay in US waters. Very shallow bottom that can damage fins. Gusty wind in winter.
