Overview

Fort Stevens Riverside is a kitesurfing spot on the Columbia River side of Fort Stevens State Park, at Oregon's extreme northwest. Unlike the ocean spots in the same park, the Riverside offers more sheltered conditions on the Columbia estuary. The waterway is protected from Pacific swells, with calmer waters and fewer waves. It is a good alternative when ocean conditions are too strong, while still benefiting from the area's thermal winds.

On the water

Cold water (10-15°C), mix of saltwater and fresh water in the Columbia estuary. 4/3 wetsuit recommended in summer, 5/3 in winter. Flatter surface than the ocean side, with moderate chop during thermal winds. Significant tidal currents in the estuary, can be strong on outgoing tide. The waterway is influenced by tides, changing depth and currents throughout the day.

Hazards

Powerful tidal currents in the Columbia estuary that can sweep riders toward the Columbia Bar. Proximity to the Columbia Bar ("Graveyard of the Pacific"): never drift toward the mouth. Heavy maritime traffic: cargo ships, tugboats, fishing boats, and coast guard. Shifting sandbars in the estuary. Cold water risking hypothermia. Frequent fog reducing visibility.
