Overview

Florence South Jetty is a kitesurfing spot at the south jetty of the Siuslaw River mouth, on Oregon's south-central coast. Complementary to the North Jetty across the river mouth, the South Jetty offers access to the ocean beach to the south and estuary waters. The spot is bordered by the vast Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area dunes stretching for miles southward. Northwest winds provide reliable conditions in summer.

On the water

Cold water year-round (10-14°C), 4/3 wetsuit minimum in summer, 5/3 in winter. Mix of saltwater and fresh water near the mouth. Very powerful currents at the river bar, especially on outgoing tide. Waves of 1 to 2.5 meters on the ocean side. Sandy bottom with shifting sandbars. The jetty provides partial protection from dominant swell but also creates refraction currents.

Hazards

Siuslaw River bar extremely dangerous: deadly currents, never venture into the bar zone. Dangerous rock jetty if drifting: maintain safe distance. Sneaker waves on the beach. Shifting sandbars creating unpredictable breaking zones. Sand dunes that can complicate emergency evacuation. Very cold water. Fishing and recreational boat traffic in the channel.
