Overview

Joe P. Beach is an oceanside spot located between Buxton and Cape Point on Hatteras Island. It's one of the closest beach accesses to Buxton village, offering Atlantic wave conditions in the wild setting of Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The beach is wide and exposed to east swells. It's a good intermediate wave kiting spot, with less current than Cape Point while benefiting from the same swell exposure. Popular with locals for its easy access.

On the water

Atlantic ocean waves with swells mainly from east to southeast. Moderate shore break. Sandy bottom with sandbars creating good sections for wave kiting. Good conditions in NE to SE winds. Longshore current is present but less strong than at Cape Point. At low tide, the beach is very wide, offering plenty of space for launching and landing.

Hazards

Rip currents possible along the beach. Shore break can be powerful at high tide. Stingrays in shallow water — do the stingray shuffle. Sea nettles (jellyfish) common in summer. Afternoon thunderstorms with lightning possible in summer. Shorebird nesting area — respect marked zones.
