Kailua Bay / Oahu kitesurf, wingfoil and windsurf spot
United States · Hawaii
Overview
Kailua Bay is one of Hawaii's most famous kitesurfing spots, located on Oahu's east (windward) coast. This stunning bay with turquoise waters and white sand is regularly ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the United States. The spot benefits from direct exposure to northeast trade winds that blow consistently and powerfully on this windward coast of the Ko'olau range. The reef protects a vast inner lagoon offering flat water ideal for progression, while waves form beyond the reef. Kailua Beach is an essential spot on the Hawaiian kite scene.

On the water
Warm water year-round (24-27°C/75-80°F), no wetsuit needed — a lycra is sufficient. The bottom is a mix of white sand and coral reef. The inner lagoon offers flat water perfect for progression and freestyle. Beyond the reef, waves form for wave riding. Moderate currents in reef channels — beware of drifting offshore. Water is generally clear and shallow in the lagoon. Area very popular with riders — friendly atmosphere.
Hazards
Shallow coral reef — wear reef booties. Currents in reef channels can pull offshore. Sea urchins present on the reef. Very popular beach — many swimmers, kayakers, and stand-up paddlers. Protected sea turtles (honu) — legal distance required. Sharks (tiger sharks) occasionally reported in Kailua Bay. Humpback whales from December to April — federal law requires 100 yards distance. Portuguese man-of-war sometimes present. Many kiters — respect right-of-way rules.
