Overview

Oneuli Beach, also known as "Black Sand Beach," is a volcanic black sand beach south of Makena on Maui's south coast. This wild and remote spot offers a spectacular setting with black sand contrasting against turquoise waters. Trade winds are accelerated by Haleakala, creating windy afternoon conditions. The spot is exposed and conditions are reserved for advanced riders due to remoteness, strong currents, and difficult access. Very few people — a true adventure.

On the water

Warm water year-round (23-27°C/73-80°F), no wetsuit needed — a lycra is sufficient. The bottom is a mix of black volcanic sand, rocks, and coral reef. Water can be rough with significant chop and waves. Strong currents along the coast and around rocky headlands. South swell in summer. The water is significantly more challenging than sheltered Kihei spots.

Hazards

Remote spot — no rescue services nearby, never sail alone. Strong and unpredictable currents. Volcanic rocks and shallow reef — reef booties mandatory. Abundant sea urchins. Limited access — dirt track to reach the beach. Protected sea turtles (honu) — legal distance required. Sharks (tiger sharks) present in this remote area. Humpback whales from December to April — 100 yards distance. South swell in summer.
