Overview

Kalama Beach Park is one of the most popular kitesurfing spots on Maui's south coast, located in Kihei between Kamaole and Sugar Beach. The park offers a large grassy area ideal for rigging and launching, with direct water access. Northeast trade winds are channeled and accelerated by Haleakala, creating reliable and powerful afternoon thermal conditions. Wind blows from the north/northeast, side-shore relative to the west-facing beach. The spot is very popular with the local kite community — friendly atmosphere guaranteed.

On the water

Warm water year-round (23-27°C/73-80°F), no wetsuit needed — a lycra is sufficient. The bottom is a mix of sand and coral reef. Water is relatively flat near shore with moderate chop further out. Good water for kitesurfing progression. Moderate lateral currents in strong winds. Area shared with swimmers — stay vigilant, especially on weekends.

Hazards

Shallow coral reef offshore — wear reef booties. Sea urchins present on the reef. Beach frequented by swimmers and families — be vigilant when launching and landing. Protected sea turtles (honu) — legal distance required. Sharks (tiger sharks) occasionally reported off Kihei. Humpback whales from December to April — federal law requires 100 yards distance. Many kiters on the water — respect right-of-way rules.
