Overview

Fort Lauderdale Kitebeach is the main kitesurfing spot in the Fort Lauderdale area, located on the beach facing the Atlantic. It's the gathering point for the local kite community, with a dedicated kitesurfing zone along the beach. The easterly trade winds blow directly onshore, providing regular chop and small wave conditions from November to May. Fort Lauderdale, nicknamed the "Venice of America" for its canals, is a major tourist destination with all services, accommodations and restaurants in immediate proximity to the spot.

On the water

The water body faces the Atlantic with a sandy bottom and moderate slope. In easterly trade winds, chop is sustained with waves of 1.5-5 feet possible. In northeast winds (winter cold fronts), waves can be more significant. The water is warm year-round (73-86°F). The riding area is parallel to the beach with good space. The Gulf Stream passes relatively close to the coast here, influencing water temperature and sometimes currents.

Hazards

Respect the dedicated kite zone and distances from swimmers. Fort Lauderdale beach is very busy, especially during spring break. Longshore drift currents are common. In westerly winds, conditions are offshore — do not ride. Maritime traffic (cruise ships, yachts) is present offshore. Watch for the Gulf Stream which can create unpredictable currents.
