Monashka Bay is a spot on Kodiak Island in the Gulf of Alaska. Kodiak Island is the second largest island in the United States and home to the famous Kodiak bears (Ursus arctos middendorffi), the world's largest brown bears. The bay offers some shelter from the open Gulf of Alaska, with dominant winds from the NE/ENE/E. Conditions are reserved for advanced riders due to extremely cold water, remoteness, and wildlife. The setting is spectacular — Alaska wilderness at its finest.

On the water

GLACIAL water year-round (4-12°C/39-54°F in summer, 2-5°C/36-41°F in winter) — dry suit MANDATORY. The bottom is a mix of sand, rocks, and kelp. Significant tidal range (3-4 meters/10-13 feet). Moderate to strong tidal currents. Water is cold even in midsummer. The bay offers some protection but Gulf of Alaska swells can enter. Kelp forests offshore can interfere with sailing.

Hazards

KODIAK BEARS — world's largest brown bears, very frequent on the island. Be on constant alert and carry bear spray. Glacial water — rapid hypothermia without dry suit. Strong tidal currents. Kelp forests can trap fins and lines. Orcas, seals, Steller sea lions (protected species), and sea otters in the water. Gray whales and humpback whales. Weather conditions changing rapidly — Gulf of Alaska storms. Extreme remoteness — limited rescue services on the island.
