Located on the city's south-facing coast, this wide sandy beach benefits from a unique south-facing orientation, rare in California, and reliable thermal winds blowing mainly from the west. East Beach is known for its accessible conditions, relatively warm water for California, and its stunning setting with the Santa Ynez Mountains as a backdrop.

Ocean beach spot with waves of 0.3 to 1.5m, generally moderate thanks to protection from the Channel Islands offshore. Water is temperate (13-19°C/55-66°F), a 3/2 wetsuit is recommended. Sandy and gradually deepening bottom. The south-facing coast offers partial protection from northwest swells. Wide riding area with few obstacles.
Hazards
Very busy area with swimmers, surfers, and stand-up paddlers — vigilance required. Possible drift currents. Stearns Wharf pier nearby — keep your distance. Occasional kelp offshore. Morning fog can reduce visibility. Local regulations on kite zones to follow. Boat traffic from Santa Barbara Harbor.
