Spot functioning

From Brest: D13 toward Lannilis/Plouguerneau, then Saint-Pabu (~45 min). From Brest: toward Ploudalmézeau for the Plage des 3 Moutons. Both beaches are nearly connected — possible to rig on one and ride to the other. Navigable at all tides except high tide with formed swell (waves close out). Sea retreats more than 500m at low tide — factor in a long walk.

Required level

Intermediate

On the water

N-facing beach break. Waves form on the incoming tide when swell is sufficient, sometimes significant in formed swell. Choppy at high tide. At low tide: beautiful flat water areas in the sand pools, sea can retreat more than 500m. Sandy bottom, a few visible reefs that are not particularly hazardous.

Parking

Several car parks ~400m from the beach. Most practical for riders: GPS 48.36810, -4.75982 (per AvelWest). Also accessible directly from Camping de l'Aber Benoît (Erleac'h). Dry toilets at the viewpoint between Danvad and Erleac'h.

Wind specificities

North Finistère: very regular depression winds (200+ navigable days/year) from the Celtic Sea — stable and consistent, unlike thermal off-winds in other regions. Summer: anemometer often 8-15kt in July-August — foil and large kites recommended. Spring NE thermal: some memorable days. The Lampaul/Saint-Pabu stretch works SW to NW (existing rose: SW, WSW, W = 100%). Waves on the incoming tide when swell is up — N-facing beach break. One of France's largest tidal ranges (>8m): significant offshore currents, especially further out. Seaweed (goémon) common — line-catching risk.

Hazards

One of France's largest tidal ranges (>8m) — strong offshore currents, especially further out. After a fall far from shore, fighting the current back upwind may be impossible. At high tide with swell: waves close out and wind becomes gusty — avoid. July 1 – August 31: swimming zone in the west section (marker flags) — no launch allowed. Abundant seaweed (goémon) — significant line-catching risk. A few reefs — reconnoitre at low tide. North Finistère: never ride alone, especially on foil.
