Brown Sugar Surf Camp Medewi

Brown Sugar is a surf camp set right on the beach at Medewi, a fishing village on Bali's west coast, far from the crowds of Kuta. The school runs small-group surf lessons for beginners, intermediates and advanced surfers, with eleven sessions from Monday to Saturday.

The beach break in front of the camp suits first-timers. More experienced surfers head to Medewi Point, known as Bali's longest left, or to a dozen other spots within a 30-minute drive, picked each day by the guides according to swell and ability. There are three programmes: learning to surf on the sandy beach, in-between sessions bridging whitewater and green waves, and coaching for intermediate surfers with video analysis twice a week.

The camp rents boards in a range of shapes and sizes, supplied with wax, fins, leash and rash vest, and covered by ding insurance. It also runs a small shop for surf accessories (Sex Wax, Rip Curl reef booties, FCS fins, rash vests, leashes) and a board repair workshop.

Guests stay in traditional Balinese bungalows or air-conditioned villas, with a pool, tropical garden, seafront restaurant and massage. On Sundays the camp organises cultural day trips (Rambut Siwi temple, GitGit waterfalls, Bedugul market, diving and snorkelling at Menjangan).

Eleven surf sessions per week, Monday to Saturday. Bookings accepted all year round.
