High 5 Surf

High 5 Surf is a community-supported lake surf school offering lessons year round on Lake Michigan in Milwaukee and Chicago, and travelling to other cities around the Great Lakes. Lessons and gear are free for everyone; donations are welcome but never expected.

Each session starts with a 2.75-hour online e-lesson (safety, forecasting, etiquette, paddling, pop-ups, wave selection), then two hours on the water including changing time. All equipment is provided: hooded wetsuit, boots, mittens, board, leash, and helmet and life jacket if wanted, plus a heated changing tent. There are two models: video coaching (the guide stays on shore, films and sends personalised feedback) or an in-water guide.

The school can also help with transport to Lake Michigan from Milwaukee or Chicago.
