Wijk aan Zee is THE reference kitesurf spot for Amsterdam riders — the most popular North Sea spot in Noord-Holland. Wide beach, two distinct kite zones, good wave potential, legendary after-session vibe at beachclubs Aloha and Timboektoe.
Two zones: Zone 1 = surf zone near Noorderpier (kiters prohibited). Zone 2 = kite zone to the right of the landmark pole in front of restaurant Aloha (May–September rule). Clean waves form on the south side of the Noorderpier with SW wind. High tide = larger waves and stronger currents. Low tide = very wide beach, flatter water offshore. Good for freeride, wave riding, and foiling. ⚠️ Long walk from car park (~800m) — watch equipment. Background of Tata Steel (former Corus) industrial plant — part of the local character.
Beachclub Aloha Wijk aan Zee (landmark reference for kite zone, café). Beachclub Timboektoe (popular after-session café). Access from Beverwijk via Tata Steel industrial road to beach car park.
Kite only in Zone 2 (right of the marker pole in front of Aloha, May–Sept). Outside season: rules more relaxed. Long walk ~800m from car park to beach. Parking behind dunes — free. GPS: Wijk aan Zee beach, Noord-Holland. From A9/A22 Beverwijk exit, follow signs to Wijk aan Zee then south past Tata Steel.
North Sea — choppy to medium waves depending on wind and tide. Clean waves south of Noorderpier in SW wind. Currents increase beyond Zone 2. Deep water from shore. Large tidal range. Cold year-round: 3/2mm summer, 5/4mm winter.
Intermediate
Open all year round
Large car park behind the dunes. Long walk (~800m) to the beach. Free parking. Access: from Beverwijk, follow signs to Wijk aan Zee, then head south along Tata Steel (former Corus) to the parking area.
Strong currents near the IJmuiden north pier. Groynes in certain zones. Busy in summer — respect zones. Waves 1–2m in strong W/NW. North Sea tidal range. Currents increase the further you sail from the pier. Wetsuit required year-round. Keep to Zone 2 (Zone 1 is surf zone near pier).
N/NW/W/SW/NE all work onshore. NW/W best for wave conditions. SW creates clean waves at Noorderpier. NE: cross-shore, good sessions. Main wind 15–25 knots, strongest Oct–March. Year-round. Best: May–Aug and Oct–Mar.
