Arugam Bay is a world-famous surf destination on the east coast of Sri Lanka in Eastern Province. The bay faces east and receives wind from the SW monsoon (May-October) wrapping around, but the primary kite season is during the NE monsoon (November-April) when winds blow onshore from the northeast.
An intermediate to advanced spot, primarily known for surfing. Kitesurfing is possible but secondary to the surf culture. Sandy bottom with some rocky areas near the points. Waves can be significant, especially during surf season. Be mindful of surfers who have priority. The town has good tourist infrastructure with accommodation and restaurants. Wind can be inconsistent for kiting.
