Grevelingendam is a kitesurf and windsurf spot on the Grevelingenmeer — the Netherlands' largest saltwater lake — near Bruinisse (Zeeland/Zuid-Holland border). The dam sits on the lake's inland side, offering two distinct zones with different wind windows: North side (best NW/N/NE/ENE/E) and South side (best S/SW/SSW). Both offer flat-water to light chop conditions — an excellent complement to the North Sea coast on gusty or very strong days.
Grevelingendam North: used primarily by windsurfers, kitesurf open from 15 March to 1 November. Rocky entry, no standing area. Intermediate level. Grevelingendam South: flat water at high tide, shallow — suitable for beginners and foilers. Both sides have toilets and parking. Entry via stones — booties essential. Restaurant nearby on the dam road. ⚠️ No kite zone in the small bay.
Big Air Kite Shop (spot info and gear) — bigairkite.com. 35 Knots kitesurfing magazine NL (spot guide). KBC Brouwersdam operates at Grevelingendam on offshore wind days. Restaurant "Grevelingen" at the spot (parallel road 1, Bruinisse) — parking also available there.
Two distinct launch points:
North spot: best NW/N/NE/ENE/E. Most popular with windsurfers. Kitesurf permitted 15 March – 1 November. Rocky/gravel entry over stones — booties essential. No standing area. Relatively steady wind in W/N directions. Gusty from S quadrant.
South spot: best S/SW/SSW. Shallow at high tide — beginner-friendly flat water. Oyster poles in water. Parking at restaurant Grevelingen (Parallel road 1, Bruinisse) or 200m along the water. Do NOT kite in the small bay area. W to N wind is gusty and shifting here (passes over elevated terrain).
Flat to light chop saltwater lake — no waves, no swell. Grevelingenmeer is the Netherlands' largest saltwater lake. No tidal fluctuation at the dam. South side at high tide: shallow flat water, perfect for foiling and beginners. North side: deeper water, directly deep from shore — foil and freeride. Wind speed slightly lower than North Sea coast (sheltered by surrounding terrain). Salt water, excellent visibility.
Intermediate
Free parking at both north and south spots. GPS: use "Strand Grevelingendam" sign from the N59. Restaurant Grevelingen (Parallel road 1, Bruinisse) also has parking. Accessible by car only.
⚠️ Walk over stones/rocks to enter water — booties strongly recommended. Small bay at the spot is a no-kite zone — do not launch there. South side: oyster poles in the water — stay aware of their position. Wind from S directions passes over elevation before reaching lake — gusty and shifting, use with caution. Kitesurfing officially limited to 15 March – 1 November on the Grevelingenmeer (nature reserve restrictions in winter). Grevelingendam North: intermediate level only (rocky entry, no standing area).
North spot: W to N steady and consistent. E/NE directions also work well. From S directions: gusty and shifting (wind passes over elevated terrain before reaching the lake) — use smaller kite than forecast suggests. South spot: S/SW/SSW good and steady. W/N gusty and unreliable at this access point. Wind speed 6–25kt typical (strong days up to 30kt).
