The kite spot of Lo Stagnone is located on the western tip of Sicily between the cities of Marsala and Trapani. This wine-growing region is relatively overlooked by tourists who mainly concentrate in the eastern part (Etna, Syracuse, Taormina) and on the beaches in the south of the island.
This region has a rich historical and cultural heritage. It is renowned for its salt production, excellent wine, incredible sunsets, and wild nature. This means that besides kitesurfing, there are many sites and activities to visit the surroundings and discover this part of Sicily.
The spot itself is a huge enclosed lagoon where you can touch the bottom everywhere. So basically, you can walk back from any point. Anyway, no boat will come to get you in case of trouble because navigation is prohibited in the lagoon: it's a nature reserve. It's quite reassuring and well-suited for both beginners and freestylers as the spot is flat everywhere. Most kite schools and clubs are along the village of Birgi Vecchi, in the north of the lagoon.
Immense, the Lo Stagnone lagoon offers many different playgrounds, and if you move away a bit from the schools, you often ride alone. It is possible, for example, to go to the tip of Santa Maria Island, an ultra-flat spot appreciated by freestylers, or behind the island to navigate alone in a wild environment. Some might be tempted to navigate in the pink Salt Pans to take beautiful photos: it should be noted that it's "relatively" forbidden, on one hand, and quite technical, on the other hand, given the very shallow depth (a few centimeters).
It is also possible to go up to the opening of the lagoon at San Teodoro and navigate at sea. When the wind is oriented north, you can surf the incoming waves, the water is translucent, and the scenery is unusual with the old salt factories. When the wind is oriented south, you can go to the secret spot of "Tahiti", behind the pink salt pans. You need to have a good level because you navigate in offshore wind, but it's worth it because the water is ultra-flat and turquoise blue.
