Overview

Porto Ferro is a wild and spectacular kitesurf spot on the northwest coast of Sardinia, north of Alghero, within a military zone that has preserved its pristine natural state. The beach is long, deserted and backed by Mediterranean scrubland. The Maestrale (northwest) blows strongly and consistently here, channelled by the surrounding hills. The water is an extraordinary shade of turquoise. One of the most beautiful — and most remote — spots on the island. Access may be restricted at certain times.

Technical details of spot

Spot functioning map

Spot functioning

Porto Ferro is a wild bay with no infrastructure — self-managed. The wide sandy beach allows easy launching at any point. The bay is deep enough for long runs. Ride downwind across the bay and walk back along the beach. No formal zones — coordinate informally with other riders if present.

On the water

Relatively sheltered bay with chop of 0.2 to 0.6m in Maestrale. Sandy bottom throughout. The bay's shape smooths out the sea compared to more exposed spots on the northwest coast. Water is clear and clean. Long downwind run available across the full width of the bay.

Parking

Dirt track from the SS127bis road north of Alghero. Access may be controlled by the military — check current status. No facilities whatsoever. Bring all food, water and equipment.

Hazards

Military restricted zone nearby — check navigation limits before riding. Strong Maestrale with significant gusts. Rocky entry points on the south side. Remote location — no rescue service on site. Bring a charged phone and go with a buddy.

Wind specificities

Porto Ferro is sheltered from the northwest by the surrounding hills, which reduces the raw power of the Maestrale compared to more exposed spots. The wind arrives smoothed with fewer gusts, typically 15 to 28 knots in summer. The bay creates a slight wind shadow effect near the southern headland — launch from the central beach for the cleanest air. The Tramontane (north) also produces sessions when it blows consistently.
