Overview

Budoni is a well-known kitesurf spot on the northeast coast of Sardinia, offering a long sandy beach ideal for kiting. The spot enjoys both the Maestrale (northwest) and the thermal sea breeze (east-northeast) in the afternoon. Located near Olbia, Budoni is easily accessible and is a popular destination for kiters visiting northeast Sardinia. The relatively flat water near shore and reliable summer wind make it a good choice for all levels.

Spot functioning

Budoni has a long sandy beach with good space for launching and landing. No formal zone organisation — self-manage with swimmers and beach users. The spot is best in the afternoon when the thermal sea breeze peaks. Several kite and windsurf schools are active in the area during summer. Ride downwind along the beach and walk back.

On the water

Open sea with moderate chop of 0.2 to 0.6m in thermal conditions, up to 0.8m in Maestrale. Sandy bottom near shore, posidonia seagrass at depth. Clean and warm water typical of the northeast Sardinian coast. No breaking waves under normal conditions.

Parking

Free parking available behind the beach in Budoni. Easy access from the SS125 coastal road. Several kite schools and rental shops nearby. Restaurants and facilities available along the seafront.

Hazards

Thermal sea breeze in the afternoon can drop suddenly at sunset — plan your session accordingly. Rocks along the coast south of the beach. Some boat traffic near the marina. Watch for swimmers during summer season.

Wind specificities

Budoni benefits primarily from the northeast thermal sea breeze, which builds reliably on summer afternoons from noon to 6pm, reaching 12 to 22 knots. The Maestrale (northwest) provides additional synoptic sessions of 18 to 30 knots. The thermal is thermally driven by the heating of the Baronia hills behind the coast — it is very predictable on hot sunny days. Wind can be slightly gusty close to shore due to the coastline topography.
