Port Alberni sits at the head of the Alberni Inlet, a 40 km long fjord on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Wind is channelled through the fjord, creating reliable thermal wind conditions in summer. The spot is protected from ocean swell by the length of the fjord. Forestry industrial area with an authentic working town atmosphere.
Open all year round
Intermediate
Flat to choppy water in the protected fjord. Brackish water (fresh/salt mix). Mud and sand bottom. Fetch limited by fjord width but good along the axis. Tidal current possible in the inlet. Significant depth in the centre of the fjord.
Marine traffic in the inlet (fishing boats, kayaks, forestry cargo). Floating logs from the forestry industry — very dangerous. Tidal current in the fjord. Cold water. Wind can drop suddenly when the thermal effect stops.
