Spot de Carabane

Carabane

Carabane

Overview

Carabane (Karabane) is a remote island at the mouth of the Casamance River, part of the Karone islands archipelago. One of the most authentic and preserved spots in Senegal — a wild paradise accessible only by pirogue.

The island offers flat water riding in the bolongs (mangrove channels) of the Casamance delta, protected from ocean swell. The NE trade wind funnels down the river creating steady conditions. When the wind aligns with the channel axis, conditions are excellent for freeride and freestyle.

This is adventure kite territory — no infrastructure on the water, no rescue boats. Excursions usually organised from Cap Skirring by kite camps like Le Papayer Ecolodge, with 4x4 and pirogue transport of gear and riders.

Extraordinary biodiversity: mangroves, tropical birds, dolphins, manatees. Visit the colonial ruins and the island's baobabs.

Season: January to May.
