Overview

Delfzijl / Eemshaven is a tidal kitesurf spot on the Ems estuary in Groningen province — the most northeasterly kitesurf spot on the Dutch mainland. Two options: the city beach at Delfzijl (in front of the Eemshotel) or the Eemshaven area. Flat Waddenzee water, tide-dependent access (2h before/after high tide). NW/N/NE/E onshore winds from this shore.

⚠️ Expert-level spot — strong tidal currents, industrial environment, limited rescue services. Eemshaven access may be restricted due to recent industrial development (check current status). The locals joke that the water is "always a few degrees warmer" near the chemical plants. Camping: no facility on site. Parking on the dike. About 200m from water to dike.

Hazards

Strong Ems estuary tidal currents — only kiteable 2 hours either side of high tide. ⚠️ Recent industrial development at Eemshaven has made access uncertain — check current status before visiting. City beach at Delfzijl can be crowded with swimmers on warm days. Very advanced level due to tidal currents and industrial surroundings. Offshore wind dangerous — drift into shipping lane.
