Kappalady Lagoon is one of the premier flat water kite spots in Sri Lanka, located on the Kalpitiya peninsula in North Western Province. The shallow lagoon sits between the peninsula and the mainland, offering butter-flat conditions protected from ocean swells. The SW monsoon from May to October provides consistent winds across the lagoon surface.
This is an ideal beginner and freestyle spot. The lagoon is shallow (waist to chest deep in most areas) with a sandy bottom, making it very safe for learning. No waves, no current, and no tidal influence inside the lagoon. The warm water and steady winds create perfect conditions for progression. Several kite schools operate directly on the lagoon.
The lagoon can get crowded during peak season with many kite schools running lessons simultaneously. Watch for other riders, especially students. The water can be murky at times. Some areas have soft mud bottom rather than sand. Wind can be slightly lighter inside the lagoon compared to the ocean side due to the land shelter effect.
