Overview

Snowkite spot at the Kastelberg summit in the southern Vosges (68), on the ridge shared between Alsace and Franche-Comté, at 1266 m altitude — just next to the Hohneck. The entire dome of the Kastelberg is rideable. Snow conditions differ on each side: on the Vosges side, snow is windswept and compact; on the Alsatian side, it is lighter and deeper. Orange markers indicate the departmental boundary. FFVL-labelled spot.

Hazards

Steep slopes and cornices on the Alsatian side — avalanches occur regularly. Old ski lift metalwork present in adjacent fields. Fog can reduce visibility to near zero and cause disorientation. Watch out for floating fence wires buried under the snow surface. Other users: snowshoers, cross-country skiers, hikers.

Wind specificities

Works with North-East, East, South-East and South winds in clear weather, 10 to 25 knots. West winds are possible but once past the ridge on the western side, wind becomes descending and can carry you away — make sure you can return to your starting point.
